Cucurrucucú by Cristina de Middel SIGNED

In 2014 Cristina de Middel became involved with the photographic archive od the newsmagazine Alerta and began to work with the idea of exploring the different languages of violence and the role played by photography in this entire area.

She made drawings of 200 different phorographs and added dialoge to them, as if they were comic strips. The dialogues have been composed out of the lyrics of Mexican ranchera songs, which in the name of love and passion celebrate actions and reactions of a rather untender nature. The three elements have combined to create a book that invites us to reexamine the content we are exposed to and to identify the violence concealed beneath accepted codes. This is a sort of reflection that is needed, especially in Mexican society, so that the limits of the acceptable can be analyzed objetively and the real impact understood.

En 2014 Cristina de Middel se involucró con el archivo fotográfico del periódico Alerta y empezó a trabajar con la idea de explorar los diferentes lenguajes de la violencia y qué papel desempeñaba la fotografía en todo ese campo.

Así, tradujo 200 fotografías a dibujo y les añadió, como si de una tira cómica se tratara, cuadros de diálogo para los personajes con letras de canciones rancheras, que en el nombre del amor y la pasión reivindican acciones y reacciones no siempre tiernas. La combinación de estos tres elementos resultó en una serie en forma de libro que ofrece una invitación a replantearse los contenidos que nos llegan y a identificar la violencia escondida detrás de códigos asumidos. Se trata de una reflexión necesaria, especialmente en la sociedad mexicana, para reconocer los límites de lo aceptable y tratarlos de manera desligada con el fin de comprender su verdadero impacto.
